“Togashi Yoshihiro was born April 27, 1966 in Shinjo City, Yamagata Prefecture (located in the northwestern part of Japan’s main island). In addition to YuYu Hakusho, he has lent his talents to ‘Hunter x Hunter,’ a popular manga….that has also been turned into a hit anime series.

As a child, he loved sports, particularly baseball, but learned to enjoy drawing too upon entering his high school’s art club.

Throughout college, he studied to become a teacher. However, it seems that during a practice teaching session, he was unnerved at having so many eyes focused on him, and panicked so badly that he didn’t know what he was saying. This experience caused him to abandon his plans to become a teacher. YuYu Hakusho features some unpleasant, unreasonable teachers, perhaps these are inspired by his failure to become a teacher himself.

After giving up on teaching, Togashi began to seriously think about art. He first sent off a manga he’d drawn to Young Jump (Shueisha), but received no response. Next, he sent his work to Shuukan Shonen Jump, and fortunately the person in charge at the time saw it. This was during his senior year of college. Togashi was contacted by the editor and asked to move to Tokyo, where he began life as a manga artist, serializing a worked titled ‘Tende Akusei Cupid’ (lit. ‘The Not Entirely Depraved Cupid’) in Shuukan Shonen Jump.

Two years later serilization of Yu Yu Hakusho began, again in Shonen Jump. This series was a runaway hit with elementary, junior and high school students, and ensured his position as a manga artist. Since YuYu Hakusho, Togashi has penned such megahits as ‘Level E’ and ‘Hunter x Huntrer’. Now he is one of Japan’s top ranked manga artists, with an annual income of over a billion yen.

In 1999, he married Takeuchi Naoko, author of the hit manga ‘Bishojo Senshi Sailor Moon.’ The manga industry dubbed this event as ‘the birth of the 2 billion yen couple,’ in reference to their combined yearly income. [They have two children together.]”
